Movie Review: Caught Stealing

In terms of horrible New York City apartments, squalor, and barely surviving, set in a gritty, dark, and depressing story, the new movie “Caught Stealing” is one of the all-time standards.

Caught Stealing stars Austin Butler as Hank Thompson and Zoë Kravitz as his girlfriend, Yvonne, who are constantly in trouble, running for their lives, and getting beaten up. One of the early beatings of Hank involves a long period of kicking his midsection while he is lying on the ground. This causes Hank to lose one of his kidneys. At some point during a scene like this, you would think that director Darren Aronofsky would have yelled ‘cut’ long before this scene became obvious overkill.

Unfortunately, this movie is mostly about scenes like this, with one of the few good aspects, the appearance of an extremely attractive house cat, who is present for almost the entire movie, despite the constant gunfire and violence. My guess is the director thought of having this cat appear in this movie to diffuse the over-the-top action scenes.

The story is about a large sum of money that two groups of criminals are trying to find at all costs. Hank has a friend who is leaving for England, and the criminals think that Hank knows where the money is. What follows are chase scenes and non-stop gunfire.

One group of criminals is a Russian gang, the other group of two Hasidic Jewish men, played by two well-known actors, Liev Schreiber and Vincent D’Onofrio, are the most violent, at one point blowing up a nightclub with many people still inside. Regina King plays a police detective in a role and a story twist that we have all seen too many times before.

While the acting is good in this film, the story, over top violence and several parts of the conclusion that do not hold water, I do not recommend this movie, despite the too high 84% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Movie Review: Blink Twice

So how does a bad movie get greenlighted for production? Considering the money involved, the number of people, and the great risk of losing money, anyone would think that there are checks and balances to avoid a highly probable financial disaster. In the case of the new and bad “Blink Twice”, this film was made most likely because of the clout of the director and co-writer Zoe Kravitz, who has been in the movie industry for well over 10 years, and her finance Channing Tatum, who is the lead character in this film. When you have contacts and clout, you can get funding, and call in favors to get other famous actors in your movie, even if the entire concept is as horrendous as this one is.

The logline for this film reads like a legal excerpt from the Cosby rape and sexual abuse trial from a few years ago. “A billionaire who owns an island tricks several women into joining him and a group of his friends for a weekend retreat where the women are drugged, sexually assaulted, and then given other drugs so they forget what happened”. How an idea this bad, years in the making, could ever have been made into a movie is at a minimum outrageous, especially considering news stories concerning Bill Cosby, Jeffrey Epstein, R. Kelly, and most recently, P. Diddy.

This film stars Channing Tatum as Slater, the billionaire, most likely inspired by the late Jeffrey Epstein who tricks women into traveling to his island. Haley Joel Osment, plays Tom, one of the friends of Slater on the island. Naomi Ackie plays Frida, one of the many female victims, and Adria Arjona as Sarah – another victim. Christian Slater has a small part in this movie, as one of the friends of Slater who live on the island, and Geena Davis as Stacy, another victim of sexual assault in a rare appearance in a movie in recent years – as I wondered why she would pick this train wreck to make any attempt at a movie comeback. This entire movie is violent and in many areas disgusting, with most of the characters wandering around drunk either from alcohol or drugs. Why Zoe Kravitz would choose this terrible idea to write and then direct her first movie makes no sense.

Most amazing about this film is that the Rotten Tomatoes rating is a way too high 79%, that makes zero sense. This movie is 10% at best, only for some of the acting, and should be missed by everyone and never should have been made. A better title for this two hour mess should have been “Blink and close your eyes” so you never see a second of this very bad movie.

Movie Review: The Batman

Probably the most important aspect to realize while watching another Batman movie like this one, is when or why or who decided that so many of these movies have almost every scene in total darkness, along with way too many depressing rainy scenes. A movie like this one, is not for anyone who is suffering from depression, for fear of falling over the edge. Far too many movies like this one, are also way too long, this one about 3 dark depressing hours. There was no reason, for this story to be told for 3 hours. Two hours and ten minutes was more than enough.

One thing different here is that the characters of the Penguin, Riddler and at the end even the Joker were dressed and appeared like normal people. No over the top makeup or costumes. However, considering that the main character Batman is wearing a completely ridiculous suit with funny ears, making the villains look normal seemed at times, out of place.

As far as the acting with the new Batman played by Robert Pattinson, Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Colin Farrell as the Penguin and Paul Dano as the Riddler – I thought it was mostly good throughout. The story however, was nothing special, we have all seen stories like this before, especially in super hero movies.

After so many serious Batman movies, lets have a new idea, reminding us of the funny 1960s Batman series. The idea is absurd, the costume is ridiculous, so how about some sense of humor rather than trying to make something serious from the idiotic.

Overall, I am surprised at the very high ratings 85% on Rotten Tomatoes and 8.7 on IMDB – with my rating in the 75% range, and a marginal recommendation.
