Movie Review: Now You See Me 2

When “Now You See Me” came out in 2013 I thought it was a pretty bad and stupid movie; one of those movies with a convoluted plot that had no basis in logic. I also thought that its fine to try and trick the audience with a twisted ending, but at least try to make that ending make some sense. Making sense should not ever include elaborate attempts at the end of a movie trying to explain ridiculous things that happened before to somehow resolve an ending that is insane.

It was obvious that the producers of this first movie were hoping that this would be an ongoing franchise where magicians commit huge crimes and give the money to their fans, which I thought at the time was a very good premise. What was bad about the first film was the stupidity of the story, the heists and the many of the implausible and nonsensical ideas that the audience was expected to believe. What I then found most surprising about this sequel, which is an attempt to save this potential long-term franchise after three years, was that a better and more believable script was not written. It was clear from the very beginning of this movie that it was going to be even worse than the original.

Many of the same actors are back for this second installment, with the exception of Isla Fischer, perhaps because of scheduling conflicts or perhaps because she read the ridiculous script. Even Michael Caine is back for this second movie, although it is a much smaller part and he appears mostly at the end of the film.

Now You See You 2 is a bad movie for several reasons. Bad Story, bad ideas, illogical and implausible action sequences, most especially at the end of the movie where there is a fake Jet flight that supposedly fools the criminal occupants on the plane. There is nothing wrong with special effects or extreme attempts to fool or amaze and audience, but when this is done poorly, makes no sense to the point of being annoying or ridiculous, then you have a bad movie.

Now You See Me 2, like Now you See Me, should be avoided.

Past Movie Review: My Cousin Vinnie

The movie“My Cousin Vinnie” came out in 1992 and I knew almost from the beginning that this was a rare great comedy. This film also contains that “once in a lifetime” conundrum that I have seen so often in movies, namely a once in a lifetime comedy performance from Marisa Tomei that never happened again in her career. For that matter, Joe Pesci never got another part like this one again, but he has gotten a good deal of great opportunities in other violent movies like Good Fellas and Casino. How could it be that Tomei could be so great a comedy actress and another opportunity like this never came along again? This just shows the precarious and very difficult field being an actor in movies can be. Marisa won a best-supporting actress Oscar in 1993 for this movie and she has been nominated for serious roles in her career. What was so unique about this Oscar win for Tomei was that it was for a comedy role, which is very rare in Hollywood.

The supporting cast in this movie was also great, including Ralph Macchio and Mitchell Whitfield as the two young guys who were arrested in the deep south. Lane Smith played the prosecuting attorney and a funny performance by Fred Gwynn in his last movie role. This movie has it all, great lines throughout, a great story and a Rocky-like premise where an unskilled and untested lawyer who barely passed the bar exam winning his case using his street smarts against impossible odds and a Judge that hated him.

Marisa Tomei’s performance in this movie is on a par with Meg Ryan’s performance in When Harry Met Sally with her great likeability, cuteness, and great comedic acting skills. Like Meg Ryan, it’s a shame Marisa Tomei never got a part like this ever again in her career. One can only hope that another miracle like this movie will happen again.

If you have not seen My Cousin Vinnie, which is unlikely due to the many times it’s been on TV, you owe it to yourself to see one of the top 5 great comedy movies in the last 40 years.

Past Movie Review: The Greatest

The movie “The Greatest” which came out in 1977 is one of the few times in movie history where the star of the movie is playing himself in a Biography. Another example of this would be Audie Murphy in the movie “To Hell and Back”, which came out in 1955. Few athletes in the history of the world have been more worthy of a movie about their careers than Muhammed Ali who died a few days ago at age 74 after a long hard 32 year battle with Parkinson’s disease.

One could wonder that if there were such a thing as a deal with the devil than would there be a better example of this than the life of Muhammed Ali? Born very poor in Louisville Kentucky in 1942 and looking up at a life of hardship and poverty, Muhammed Ali was born with not only great boxing skills and great speed for his size, but also good looks and a very likable and humorous personality. Were it not for all of these miracle skills, Ali would have had a very depressing and meager life in poverty. Instead, he obtained worldwide fame, great wealth and did a great deal for world peace, race relations and speaking out against a horrible and unjust Vietnam War. Along with all of this was that the price he paid for all of the positive aspects of his life that came from boxing were enormous. 32 years ago, mostly due to his too many years of boxing and getting hit in the head, Ali developed Parkinson’s disease which was so severe he shaked constantly and could barely speak for most of the remainder of his life. One could ask themselves if they were given a great gift for half their life would they agree to pay for this with a severe disease for the remainder of their life? Many would say no to this, thinking that health is the most important thing and shaking like Muhammed did along with being unable to speak and so many other physical problems would never be worth all the positive things that Ali was given in the fist half of his life. Others would say that all the good Ali did with his great boxing skills, great speeches, traveling the entire world and his appearances and charitable contributions that helped so many people would be worth all the suffering he had to endure. I am very sure that Muhammed would not change a thing in his life and consider it all worthwhile no matter how long and hard he suffered.

Fans of Ali were all hoping that he would retire after the 1974 Foreman fight when he was at the very peak of his career or definitely after the final fight with Joe Frasier in 1975 or definitely after he lost to a greatly inferior fighter Leon Spinx or even Ken Norton. But Ali would not quit fighting in time to save himself and it was the fight he had with Larry Holmes in 1980 that showed he was long past his prime and the head injuries he suffered during that fight could have been when the tide turned and he developed severe Parkinson’s disease 4 years later. Amazingly Ali did fight one more time, losing to an average fighter named Trever Berbick in the Bahamas in 1981 when he had no more reflexes and already was showing some signs of Parkinsons. So what gave Ali great fame and fortune is ultimately what killed him, which is why his life was very much like a deal with the devil.

Ali was much more of a person and legend than boxing will ever be and unfortunately he didn’t realize this fact enough to save his own life. He will be very sorely missed by everyone in the world.
